Geovisualization Developer's Guide

Basic Concepts

The basic concepts that are most useful to understand while working with Geovisualization are the following:

  • Authentication: A combination of application credentials and access tokens needed to use Geovisualization resources, including making requests to the Geovisualization REST API. See Access Credentials.
  • Dataset: The data stored in the Geovisualization cloud, identified by a unique dataset ID. See Datasets.
  • Query: The JSON object, defined with the Geovisualization REST API query language, that defines how the data in the dataset is fetched, aggregated, transformed and served. Each query is identified by a unique query ID. See Querying your Datasets.
  • Dynamic parameters: URL parameters that map to variables in the namespace of the query. See Dynamic Parameters.
  • Heat map: A color-coded distribution of data on a geographical map. See Heat Maps.
  • Raster map: A color-coded map of data aggregated into a regular grid of squares ("raster cells") of constant geographical size. See Raster Maps.
  • Clustering: The technique of grouping objects according to an arbitrary distance between the objects and a cluster center. See Markers for further details.
  • Tiling: The process of separately serving data in multiple chunks, arranged by map tile, instead of in a single, large data request. See Data Filtering.
  • Pixel space: The two-dimensional grid of screen pixels.
  • Map tile: A square in pixel space (typically 256x256 pixels).
