Introduction

HERE GNSS Service is offered for various types of client devices to make it possible for them to

  • shorten the time needed to get the first GNSS-based position estimate both in online and offline mode.
  • achieve continuous position tracking with much weaker signal levels both in online and offline mode.
  • reduce power consumption by reducing the time it takes to calculate the current position both in online and offline mode.
  • improve the overall GNSS position estimate accuracy to sub-meter range in online mode.

HERE GNSS Service has asynchronous WebSocket API (HERE GNSS API) that supports both single shot requests and subscribing corrections as streaming data. The API uses protobuf messages. The data is returned in the standard LPP BER encoded format.

HERE GNSS API provides three types of data that can be purchased as separate products:

GNSS assistance data is used to shorten the time needed to get the first GNSS-based position estimate. The data is provided to the GNSS positioning engine of the client device. The positioning engine will use this data in connection with the GNSS satellite data it receives through the GNSS receiver of the client device.

HD GNSS correction data is used to improve the overall GNSS position estimate accuracy if the GNSS positioning engine of the client device supports usage of SSR corrections.

Predicted GNSS assistance data allows the client device to store the predicted navigation models to the device and use them also in offline mode for 7 or 14 days.

Terminology

API keys - Simple and secure credentials for using your application with HERE APIs.

ASN.1 - Formal notation used for describing data transmitted by telecommunications protocols like LPP.

Assistance data - Navigation models and other data (for example, ionospheric model) that aids the calculation of GNSS position in device.

Beidou - Global navigation satellite system operated by China.

BER - Basic Encoding Rules, a self-describing and self-delimiting format for encoding ASN.1 data structures.

Correction data - Data that helps position GNSS receivers more accurately.

GALILEO - Global navigation satellite system created by the European Union.

GLONASS - Global navigation satellite system operated by Russia.

GNSS - Global Navigational Satellite System. An umbrella for all satellite systems like GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, Beidou, and QZSS.

GPS - Global Positioning System owned by the United States.

HD GNSS - High Definition GNSS, a HERE product providing correction data services.

LPP - 3GPP defined LTE Positioning Protocol.

Navigation model - Ephemeris (orbit) data and clock model for a satellite.

OAuth - Open Authorization framework. Industry-standard protocol for authorization.

PE - Position Engine, client software running the position algorithms.

PPP - Precise Point Positioning, a positioning technique behind HD-GNSS product utilizing SSR correction data.

Protobuf - Google's language-neutral, platform-neutral, extensible mechanism for serializing structured data.

QZSS - Quasi-Zenith Satellite System. Regional navigation satellite system comissioned by Japan.

SSR - State Space Representation. Correction data that models major errors over large areas.

TTFF - Time to first fix. The time required for a GPS navigation device to acquire satellite signals and navigation data and calculate a position.

WebSocket - Computer communications protocol providing full-duplex communication channels over a single TCP connection.
