Feature Tile Assignment

In many cases, map feature geometries can span across multiple tiles, based on the feature. For example, long linear features such as rivers or railroad, or large polygons such as natural parks, or municipality boundaries.

When features span across multiple tiles, the feature is only included in one of the many tiles its geometry traverses. By convention, the tile the feature is associated to is the tile where its southernmost/westernmost shape point is located.

In the example below, a linear cartographic feature (highlighted) spans across multiple tiles, one having its southernmost point in the bottom left tile (23595456).

In the example below, a polygonal feature (highlighted) spans across two tiles, but having its southernmost point in tile 23595421.

In case of segments spanning across multiple partitions, the segment is referenced in the tile partition where the start node is located. Nodes are referenced by the tile partition holding its coordinates.

In the example below, the selected segment spans three different tiles, but is published in the center tile (20096647) where its start node is located. The start node is in the same tile, whereas the End node is in the top left tile. See the figures below.

When a node is on a partition edge, the node is included in the northern and/or eastern partition except for the following situations:

  • When nodes are located on an edge at 180°, the node is included in the western partition.
  • When nodes are located on an edge at 90°, the node is included in the southern partition.
