Venue Maps API Developer's Guide

Tiles

This section provides reference to the data tiles returned by Venue Maps API.

What is a Tile?

A Tile is a square with side length 256 pixels.

Venue Maps API divides the globe into individual map tiles. At minimum zoom, the world is contained in a single map tile, at the next zoom level up, the world  is two tiles wide and two tiles high. Then 4x4, 8x8, 16x16, up to the maximum zoom for a particular region. Each zoom level splits the tiles in two, doubling the number of tiles across the width and height. This representation is based on the Normalized Mercator projection.

How to identify tile(s) for a venue?

In order to get a certain tile(s) of any type, two steps are performed:
  • First, you need to calculate the tile address(s); An example of how to calculate the tile address for a certain Lat, Lon is explained in here.
  • Second, you need to convert the tile address to a Quadkey; An example of how to convert a tile address to a Quadkey is explained in here. Use the Quadkey(s) calculated to get the tiles for a certain venue.
